Purpose
The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.
Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics.
Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.
Admission Requirements and Special Conditions
A high school diploma (or equivalent), satisfactory scores on college placement tests (or equivalent) and a minimum GPA in English and mathematics are required. If students have deficiencies in English and/or mathematics, RCC offers pre-college courses to prepare students for the Cosmetology curriculum.
Additional Curriculum Notes
1. Students are required to complete all cosmetology courses with a “C” or better and acquire 1500 clock hours to qualify for the NorthCarolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners.
*COS127 must be taken after all COS courses have been completed in order to receive State Board hourly credit. The hours gained for COS127 cannot be used for the 1500 hours required to take the NC State Board Cosmetic Arts Licensure Exam. Additionally, if taken before the other COS courses, the hours cannot be used for the Natural Hair Care State Board Licensure Exam. The NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts requires students to be enrolled and receive hourly credit from only one program at a time.
